At the time of writing, up to 25 percent of web traffic now comes from smartphones and tablets [updated: over 50% in 2015], and this is set to grow rapidly over the next few years!

“48% said that if a site didn’t work well on their smartphones, it made them feel like the company didn’t care about their business.”

“67% of mobile users say that when they visit a mobile-friendly site, they’re more likely to buy a site’s product or service.”

Statistics taken from Mobile-friendly sites turn visitors into customers by Google

It is now a fact that we are changing our internet browsing habits. Web browsing on tablets and mobiles is on the increase at the expense of Desktop PC’s and laptops.

My family is a prime example of this, my daughters each have a 7″ Google Nexus tablet and a smartphone, my wife has a Kindle Fire and an iPhone and I also have an iPhone and iPad. So when it comes to browsing the internet the tablet and smartphone are now our weapons of choice.

So what does this have to do with your website?

Over the last couple of years web designers have started to build more intelligent, responsive websites that look at the screen widths of the devices (desktop PC’s, tablets and smartphones etc) that they are being viewed on and reorganise their content and layout accordingly to display in a more accessible format.

You can see this in action with our website here! If you are viewing this page on a desktop PC or laptop try reducing the width of your browser window by grabbing the bottom right corner of the frame and dragging it in towards the top left of the screen. You will notice as you make the browser window smaller the content on the site will start to move and change, resizing and reorganising to suite the space available. If you are already viewing this page on a tablet or smartphone you will notice the text is easy to read and everything fits nicely! So not only does our website look great on desktop computers but will also give smartphone and tablet users with smaller screen widths a quicker and enhanced viewing experience when browsing our website.

Now try this with your website! If the content on your site does not resize in the same way ours did then your website does not have a responsive web design and will frustrate your potential customers visiting your site on tablets and smartphones with a poor browsing experience and could even lead to lost sales!!!!

But don’t despair! We can upgrade your website with a responsive web design making it more accessible to your customers visiting your site using a tablet or smartphone.
