Kinston, officially known as Kingston upon Thames is the principal settlement of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thomas in the southwest of London. Originally Kingston began as a market town used by Saxons to crown their kings. Located 12 miles South West of London, Kingston is a major metropolitan centre included in the London Plan. Lying approximately 10 meters above sea level, Kingston is located on the non-tidal part of the River Thames. Kingston used to be part of the large and ancient parish of Surrey county with the town being an ancient borough and was reformed in 1835.
Kingston has been home to the Surrey County Hall from 1893, even though in 1965 Kingston changed from being in the county of Surrey to being part of Greater London. The town centres is mostly in the KT1 postcode area, except for some areas north of Kingston railway station being in the KT2 postcode area. The population of Kingston comprises of four wards being Canbury, Norbiton, Tudor and Grove, in the 2011 census was listed as have a population of 43,013.
Modern Kingston now has one of the largest and busiest shopping centres outside of central London. Including a diverse selection of popular high street stores and many independent retailers and boutique shops. The most notable major retailer in Kingston is Bentalls, first opened in 1867 by Frank Bentall in Clarence Street where it can still be found today.
Other notable facts about Kingston include Richmond Park (one of the oldest Royal Parks in the UK) which is located between Kingston, Roehampton and Richmond. Also Kingston was the venue for four Olympic cycling events in the 2012 summer games, the men’s road race, women’s road race, men’s road time trial and women’s road time trial.
