Redhill is in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead in Surrey and is part of the commuter belt, Redhill and the adjacent town of Reigate form a single urban area.
Redhill came into being when a road was built in approximately 1818. The settlement was originally known as Warwick Town and became known as Redhill when the post office was moved from Red Hill Common in 1856.
Redhill is among the few locations in the United Kingdom where Fuller’s Earth can be extracted, although the extraction ceased in 2000. Alfred Nobel first demonstrated the effects of dynamite at a Redhill quarry in 1868.
Richard Carrington the amateur astronomer built a house and observatory in Redhill around 1852 and his astronomical observations first corroborated the existence of solar flares as well as their electrical influence upon the Earth.
